We developed the idea while experimenting with small pieces of paper, lit in such a way that the light produced a smooth yet strong gradient, resulting in an interesting glow. This glow can also be used to light the scene and act as a key light. This simple technique inspired us to create several works based on it.
Behind the scenes.
The idea
Sometimes inspiration for a work comes from exploring the scope of what is possible within the medium in which we are working—in our case, still life photography. In this sense, limitations can be as inspiring as possibilities. This phenomenon definitely played a significant role in shaping our artistic approach.
Making
Our scope of possibilities is, at first glance, quite narrow, as it extends only as far as the walls of our small studio allow—roughly 3 x 5 meters. Another limitation is the choice of objects and the size of the background. Yet, these very constraints helped us shape the project. Without them, we might have lost ourselves in an ocean of endless possibilities, missing the defining thread of who we are as artists and what we actually do.
Materials.
Paper.
For paper-based prints, we use our favorite paper from the most renowned German manufacturer: Hanemühe Photo Rag. This robust paper features a pronounced texture while still reproducing even the finest details.
Frame.
We use only high-quality, German-made frames in a neutral wooden tone.
Aluminium.
Aluminium is our preferred material for its high-quality reproduction, attractive aesthetics, and practicality. Best of all, no frame is needed—everything for mounting is included, resulting in an elegant, minimalist solution.
