Most of our photography tries to capture different kinds of natural, outdoor light. We aim to recreate this light as accurately and richly as possible. This approach has become the cornerstone of our style and connects most of our work. This photo, however, was the first time we tried something different: simulating indoor light. While the setup changes, our basic thinking stays the same.
We always start by asking ourselves:
What’s the lighting like? Is it sunny, cloudy?
What time of day is it?
Where is the sun (or light source) compared to what we’re photographing?
Only after we have the answers do we start building the scene, paying close attention to every little detail.
Behind the scenes.
The idea
Our main place for finding props, the "Maisons du Monde" store in our city, announced it was closing down and having a final sale. We were quite sad because it had been so important for building our collection of props when we first started mmiri. On the bright side, we were able to buy some lovely linen curtains that were usually too expensive. These curtains gave us the inspiration for this photograph.

Making
Creating this piece meant stepping away from our usual lighting style, which made it a really interesting project. We also faced the challenge of dealing with a strong moiré effect – that strange pattern you can get when the camera sensor's grid pattern clashes with the rough texture of the fabric.

Materials.
Paper.
For paper-based prints, we use our favorite paper from the most renowned German manufacturer: Hanemühe Photo Rag. This robust paper features a pronounced texture while still reproducing even the finest details.

Frame.
We use only high-quality, German-made frames in a neutral wooden tone.

Aluminium.
Aluminium is our preferred material for its high-quality reproduction, attractive aesthetics, and practicality. Best of all, no frame is needed—everything for mounting is included, resulting in an elegant, minimalist solution.
